This month we met Alice from @tiny_greens. She is a Canadian girl from Vancouver who has built a beautiful mini indoor jungle in her small apartment.
Hello Alice!
When and how did you fall in love with plants?
I think my love for plants was always there, but I started to consciously collect plants during the last 2 years or so.
My love for plants has been inspired by my mom, who probably has more plants than I do!
What's the best thing about living with houseplants?
The best part about houseplants is the indoor oasis they create.
They improve oxygen levels, they make a living space greener, and they can also become a tasty little snack (if you're growing indoor mini tomatoes or herbs!)
My favorite hobby is taking care of my plants; it's very therapeutic! I regularly talk to my plants (and to my dog!) and it calms me down each time.
How many plants do you have at the moment? How can you manage to have so many?
I have never counted how many plants I have - but it's probably around 60.
I usually bundle my plants together in groups to make the watering process easier. There's the group of plants that require frequent watering together (e.g., tropical plants and ferns), and there's the one for plants that like to be ignored (e.g., cactus).
Also, I dedicate 5 minutes every morning to a plant tour/check around the house!
What's your experience with Pilea Peperomioides?
I love, love, love Pilea!
During the last 2 years, I must have given away at least 8 baby plants to friends and family.
Contrary to what I read online, my Pileas actually love bright, direct sunlight.
I would suggest to let the soil dry out completely before watering Pilea.
Personally, I tend to remove the pups from the mother plant once they are big enough; otherwise, it will start to get droopy from lack of nutrients.
You have a dog.
How's living with a pet and plants in the same place?
I live with my 5-year-old Boston Terrier, Ollie.
I must say I am very lucky that Ollie has 0 interest in my plants.
He will always sniff a plant if I come home with a new one; but after the initial sniff, his interest is completely lost.
Do you have any plants on your wish list right now?
Yes! I love collecting different types of Hoyas and Anthuriums.
